Primary role of the Flight Management System (FMS)?

To optimally plan routes, performance, and navigation data to assist the flight crew and autopilot.

The main idea is that the Flight Management System is the planner and guide for the trip. It takes the flight plan, aircraft weight and performance data, and the current navigation database to compute the optimal lateral path (waypoints and airways) and vertical profile (altitude and speed) for the flight. It then provides these guidance cues to the crew and to the autopilot/autothrottle so the aircraft can follow the chosen route efficiently while respecting constraints like winds, weather, airspace, and ATC requirements. This focus on routing, performance optimization, and navigation data usage is what sets the FMS apart from systems that actually control engines, manage cabin services, or monitor weather radar.

To control engine thrust and fuel flow managers.

To manage cabin systems and passenger services.

To monitor weather radar and provide storm avoidance alerts.
